You're self defense teacher was correct...pencils can cause alot of damage. So can high heels....a friend of mine was walking to her car (she was being followed by a man very closely) and at the right moment she buried her high heel in the top of the guys foot! She stomped down with such force the heel went slap thru his foot. Needless to say she got away unharmed. I started this thread because Minuteman asked me one night "Honey, how many weapons do you see in this house?" Really got me to thinking...we really do have all kinds of weapons around us whether we be indoors or outdoors.

Pencils are great, and anything you have available that is long like that can be used to go for the eyes too. That's pretty gross, but if they mean to harm or kill you, go for the eyes. That includes small caliber pistols--go for the eyes.

So true Sandy. I have a Sig 22LR......believe you me that's exactly what I had in mind......you take out the computer well the rest is history.

Daisy, you caught him with the element of surpise!! Surprising someone is also a good tool......may give you those extra needed seconds in a situation.

You mention a hi-lite marker....what about a can of spray paint? Our tellers at the bank always had a bundle of money in the drawers that was equiped with a paint pack......anyone that stole it the paint got all over them....you definitely knew who the culprit was.

Back in the day, feudal peasants in Japan used to have a very useful tool for self-defense.

Hollow-out an egg, like you're making Easter decorations. Seal one end with candle wax.
Mix sand, ground pepper and white ashes from a woodfire. Mix it all together good and then sift it into the egg shell. Fill the shell all the way up to the top, tapping the powder down as you go so that it settles and really fills the eggshell. Then seal the top with another drip of wax.

The resulting egg is surprisingly durable. It can be toted around in your coat pocket without having to take extra measures to protect it. But if you take it in your hand and give it a good deliberate squeeze it crushes readily, and now you have a fistfull of blinding powder to throw. The sand penetrates, the pepper attacks the eyes, nose and throat, and the ashes make a nice big cloud. That's how farmers used to defend themselves during the age of swords and bows.

Thanks Bobby...excellent idea. No one would expect something like this especially from an egg!! Those oriental folks had it down pat when it came to making weapons out of anything. Very resourceful.

A number of martial arts striking weapons are adaptations of agricultural implements. Since the Peons were denied the posession of weapons they developed techinques for using the tools of everyday life as weapons, and IIRC the Ninjas were masters of improvised weaponry. (If I am wrong here, someone pleae correct me)

A friend of mine found himself being menaced by his neighbor's pit bulls in his own yard on the way to work. (Neighbor was a Chimo on probation) He said the next time the dogs would get a faceful of 9mm. I recommended that he use long range hornet killer. The next time the dogs came at him he gave the closest one a blast of bug spray. It stopped the dog in his tracks - started to yelp and rolled over on the ground, whereupon my friend hosed down the dog's sack. The dog was unable to exit the premises (as in totally disabled) so the owner had to retrieve it. My friend told Chimo Owner that this was the last time non-lethal means would be used.

The pencil in the shoulder sounds like a good idea as does the egg. Thanks for the tips. BTW, Ninjas carried eggs full of ground glass which would be thrown intact into an enemy's face, to burst and deposit the ground glass into the eyes. I'm sure that this would be unacceptable in today's legal system so it's presented just as an interesting historical factoid.

You're right James...the glass thing in the egg probably wouldn't be a good idea in todays world. However I could see where an egg full of cayenne pepper would be most effective. When I was putting peppers up last year I accidently got some in my eyes.........couldn't see anything for about 15 or 20 minutes. Needless to say I am very careful now when handling peppers.

Back to the "hot shot", I had heard from a self defense instructer one time that a can of bug spray is the best non leathal thing to keep at arms length around the house, car, etc.
Better than pepper spray, usually no permanant damage to attacker.... and you can't prove premeditation if it did cause damage, just the first thing you could defend yourself with.

I think the thought alone of being sprayed with bug spray in the face is ebough to freak out anybody.......

Mrs MM. Maybe the normal person would be freaked out, but not "bad guys" Always think outside the box when doing things. That's how little guys win fights.. The bigger kid never thought the smaller kid would pick up a brick and smash him in the head with it.... Out of the box thinking... and using all available resources to stop an offender.

You're right Donald....probably the bad guys wouldn't freak out.....guess that's where the element of surprise would come in handy. We all need to practice being quick thinkers! The brick thing.....I actually done that when I was a kid to the neighbors boy......got into alot of trouble but boy it was effective!! I never had anymore trouble out of him after that!
