Hey folks! As I have noticed some of our members have problems with their computers and electronic devices. In this day and age, they are not gonna go away. They are just going to get more complex and harder to understand.

I would like the Administrators to keep this up, if-they-could, to help folks out. I'll be posting alot of what I know, and have picked up over the years....also, our resident computer security specialist and IT Person, Donald Wolf, is gonna be posting info here, as well.

Donald Wolf, who is in the IT Field, makes his living doing such stuff......thats all I'm gonna say. Me....I build things, I mess with things......I'm, for a better lack of terms here, a Geek. I keep on top of all the gizmos out there.

Anyway....He will be posting some 'White Paper' and the real techno stuff as it comes into his cranium. And I will add stuff as it becomes avail., and whenever I need straightening out....Don will slap me around some....

--A Special Heart Felt Thanks go out to everyone that Contribute here, especially when I'm Away, Especially to NoCo Patriot and Donald Wolf, Thank You Brothers!--

yea, uh-huh, I hear ya!----I have this big long title (Enterprise Infrastructure Information Systems Security Manager), and even with that and my post-graduate education in computer security----

Like I said, Your our Expert! Hahahaha......Folks, he's a very under-rated guy, lets give him a big round of applause!!!!!

MM. The question is when you find out about someones computer problems do you notify them?

If you think they have any kind of bug, trojan, spyware, yes. If you think its government sponsored 'Hackware', do it in a round about fashion, like, look at the friends list, send them a message, then have them do something like      (*)(*)      or [-][-]       you know, eyes......like the hand signal.

Sometimes, mine act screwy because I have so much running on my laptops, mine heat up. One of mine is mounted in a aluminum hardcase and has both water cooling and some fans......I have it in overclock mode cause of all the stuff its checking for. I'm running Packet Sniffers, LiveWire and WireShark, and a couple of Naughtys, just to mention a couple.

Yes....you should give them a sign. If its serious stuff, and a good computer person can't purge the infection out........always have it wiped & reformatted.....

The one I told you about that has all the cooling capabilities, Its pretty rugged, I can hook up to a infected system and have my way with it. I let folks know when I find out....the eye thing.....

If the Gov. gets your computer, 1st thing outta the chute, have you HD replaced. They are cheap, and when you get one, go bigger and faster, if you can. But go namebrand! Seagate, Maxtor, etc....

Oh, before you replace your HD, have your system overwritten, then reformatted. THEN, replace your HD.
my question is you say get another HD,well over time won't that also get infected?i also been reading about the gov.making anti-virus software companies leaving a backdoor so they can put malware on your computer,i back my files up to an external HD.also scan my computer twice a day.
thanks for the info noco patriot,i admit i'm no expert in software,i'll try to find that link to post.thanks for the info again.

OK, before we move on to important stuff......your system has to run effeciently. This is going to be about slow systems that have too much stuff loaded on them. If you unload some of this stuff, and clean it out, it will indeed run better. The best thing is not to load it down with junk to start with.

================================================================================

First order of business......you download stuff, right? Well, get yourself a Download manager and accelerator! 1 important feature to look for, and that is a scan with antivirus on download. Yes, this is a good thing. You either got to do it manually, but if the computer can do it automatically, I say let it.

There are alot out there, so look around. And be careful of free ones that are loaded with spyware and advertisements. They can even hi-jack your browser and install evel crap on your system.

Your New system or New/Used system you just got, load your MS system on it. You don't need all the bells and whistles in Word or all the other stuff. Just load what you need! No More! Especially for laptops and anything other than top-of-the-line! All the needless crap will slow you down, and spread your resources too thin.

You want AV and a Firewall. Both of these are built into Windows. If you download your own or prefer another suite.....get all the security stuff in one suite that you can. Then turn the stuff off in Windows. You don't want 2 diff. versions of the same thing running on one system. This will not work at all! They will fight each other and crash!

What I run on mine, as I told you, is alot of small programs. There isn't any big screensavers on my system.....they use up enormous amounts of memory and resources. I have backgrounds that I use, I change those once a day. After my system is idle for 10 minutes......my screen goes blank. Also, my internet connection is severed. That way, I don't have a open line. And I have a autoupdate program that patches all my software and tracks updates. It also informs me of any program changes......

If you have to download Screensavers.....use the least many you need, the smallest you need. These things can get HUGE! AND EAT TONS OF RESOURCES! Also, be sure you scan them with your AV, just rightclick and choose scan....DON'T GO TO DIRTY SITES!!!! Use your version of 'Web Of Trust', theres several out there.

Songs and/or CDs or DVDs........Choose a small player such as KMPlayer or others. Windows media is good, but don't have 2 or 3.....you don't need them. For laptops with limited resources.....use SPLAYER. Its open-source, its easy on resources, and its efficient. These I have mentioned will play anything. If you do backups, like I do, you'll need a data downloader, some of the players have these built in. I use for my ISO Boot disc for my encryption, I use CDBurnerXP, its free and works. BUT, VCL I believe does it too.

Music, and photos.....store on your HDs' or any portable zip drives. Don't get me wrong, keep some on there, by all means, just don't store 20 gigs on there. Remember, we're after efficiency here folks!

Another place where theres a big slowdown in system resources, and this might sound stupid. Theres upteen gillion languages downloaded and stored in your OS! I kid you not! And they are all enabled! DISABLE THEM! If  you wanna get funky and talk to your cousin in Italy, and you Italian isn't working for you, your browser can translate it! Do't go loading a 200 meg program......a simple browser plugin is all you need.

Things you don't need, turn them off in the settings. Be careful Though! If you are unsure, ask someone to help you that knows! Theres no reason why going to a website ought to take more than 5 seconds to load! (unless your paranoid like me and are looking at everything)The faster your machine responds, the quicker it can seek out viruses, and bad emails. These, sometime, try to slow the computer down so it can load itself! The same with Hackware. If you don't know someone online, do no response! The perfect setup for malicious code!

With computers changing so fast, I prefer to get systems just a few years older, add memory, HD's, chips......it saves money in the long run. You can get a big, fast HD for under a $100, and expand your memory for about half that. With all the trimming you've done and lightening of the system, the computer will run longer, faster, and cooler.......you can often surpass the performance of a new computer with your older one for under $250, and thats including a new external HD to sote all your photos, songs and dvd's on.....

                 Stay Safe.......

And THAT MONEY I SAVE, can be put toward uniforms, scopes, ammo, backpacks, supplies, etc....

Attention Folks! FTD has decided that everyones FaceBook pages and accounts will be part of background checks.

Next thing ya know you'll need to bring your ID to buy a pack of wieners..............

Just a heads up.....

One of the easiest and free thing to do is use Linux instead of Windows. Ubuntu is my recommendation.

I enjoy Linux. And I have Ubuntu.....great system. I learned on DOS, I moved to Linux while Windows was still cutting its teeth. Anybody remember 95'? Horrible!!! Believe it or not, 98' though full of bugs, was one of the most stable systems........hopefully, XP will be around a long time.

They don't work all the bugs out before they shoot out another version!.

From my own personal standpoint, from lowest to highest, is XP, then Apple, Then the Linux. Wanna get all up there, Unix.........
