A Victory?
Just hours after Obama once again used executive privilege to keep documents re: the "Fast & Furious" scandal withheld, the House Committee of Government Oversight & Reform voted 23-17 to hold Attorney General Eric Holder in Contempt of Congress. This is the first time in this administration that anyone in Congress has gone up against the Executive Branch. Mr Holder was pleading with President Obama right up to hours before the vote. One of his arguments was based on the fact that he believed that this type of action by Congress would hurt the relationship between them & the Executive Branch!! In a comment in an 11 page article in The Washington Post, Holder was said to be very concerned that this would affect the system of "checks & balances" as it exists between the three branches.

Is this a victory? Or another distraction for the American people? Apparently, there were thousands of calls, faxes, emails received about this case. The case will still be required to be voted on by the House next week. It is, also, the first time that a sitting President has attempted to use Executive privilege to affect a charge of contempt against any member of an administration. One cannot help but wonder if his actions in this particular case may have hurt the judgment against his Attorney General... In a Google search, I found an item that states that Congress has the ability to overturn an Executive Order if it interferes with an investigation into a criminal act. Senator Chuck Grassley, who is also investigating the case as a member of the Senate's Judiciary Committee, stated that he could not understand why the President would even attempt to withhold records that supposedly do not concern him, & that he claims to know nothing about. His comment was that this raises "monumental questions," as this entire process is one of the most important in the "checks & balances" of our Republic.

I will be holding my breath, in a "believe it when I see it" kind of way. Why, all of a sudden, does it sound as tho these people are playing by the rules??? And, it appears to be a very good idea for the American people to keep the pressure on.
