Permalink Reply by Nam Vet on May 18, 2011 at 8:05pm It is always better game when everyone wants to play by the rules. Me, I just work all that much harder. Just yesterday I sent out a email message to my sisters children, letting them all know that it could be that their mother and Stepdad might not be with them when the crap hits the fan. They would be in the drivers seat, should thay deside to leave town. Now I am aware that some people thinks that anyone who bugs out is not one of them and I say to them all that all wars are fought on land on the sea and in the air and not all fighting will be done just in the cities. Except in the city and towns, the enemies will be far greater in numbers. They and anyone that stays in the city will be fighting others of their own kind trying to keep what is theirs.
But if you love your family and if you want to keep them safe then you will work all he harder trying to convence them to take a helping hand.
You could tell them that they might be on their own. I just told them the truth and I told them some of the things that they would be better off with if they have them or can get them.
I told them about the Recreation and Road Atlas sold here in Nevada that shows where water can be found and where mineshafts can be found. I let them know about solar panels, batteries, binoculars, guns and ammo, bows and arrows if they can't have a firearm or if they can't afford one. I informed them about shealters like tent trailers, travel trailers and motor homes and lastly about tents.
I let tem know about gas cans, watercans and can goods as well as dry goods. Hunting knives and about how they might need to know about setting traps. I let them know about how to pick a camping site that they can defend and about finding one with a great to good escape route.
I know that I did not tell them everything that they would be needing to know, yesterday. I know that I did not tell them about the different wild edible plants that they should find, but I have told them all about that over the past year or more.
We would likely make some mistakes and so will they, whether they go or stay. All we can do to help them is to ask God to watch out for them if we can't make it.
Permalink Reply by Timothy Cochran on May 18, 2011 at 9:56pm I sat the wife down and we had a long talk about what is going on with the dollar and what the implications are if the dollar collapses. We talked about historical episodes of very high inflation/hyperinflation. We talked about what could reasonably be expected to transpire if the dollar loses its place as the international reserve currency. By the time we finished, she was making lists of things I wouldn't have thought to stockpile.
My father has been a tougher nut to crack. He's waiting for the Rapture to come any day now and isn't particularly interested in anything as mundane as an economic collapse. Catastrophic tornadoes, OTOH, he can relate to and prepare for, LOL.
Permalink Reply by big bird on May 19, 2011 at 12:22am Do know what being the village idiot is like. The black sheep of the family and for most of the world. Trying to convince family for two decades to prepare for the inevitable. The look on the faces still gives the geebers!!! It sounded a little crazy myself being a teenager trying to convince grown adults that in the future we would need to be prepared to survive five years, self sustainable for me and a hundred of my closest friends and family, from most anything less than a direct hit from a nuclear missile. So yes it is finally a little pressure off my mind to know there is other peeps out there with a sense of urgency to prepare. I wont be able to eat an IPOD or drink an XBOX when the time comes. Peace and Love to you all.
See you on the other side!
Permalink Reply by Calpat on May 19, 2011 at 4:45am I am the black sheep, the "Guy" at the party, the scary fellow. I just keep howling to the wind. I do my best to prepare and offer my hand to help no matter how many times it gets slapped back.
Good luck.
Permalink Reply by DJGauvreau on May 19, 2011 at 8:10am Calpat, same here. It's just like being on the other side of a calm, large lake or pond and trying to communicate with all the happy (but stupid) people having so much fun as the sun sets. Sure they wave and scream back, but no matter. I don't stock pile food, basic stuff like rice, beans. I'm more a tool & supplies guy, ya never know what might happen. Besides, with all the dogs, cats and looters, fresh meat won't be a big concern of mine. Anything and everything goes with rice! I just might write my first book, "Cooking w/liberals,looters and fools." sniff...sniff...Smells like a best seller to me.
Permalink Reply by DJGauvreau on May 19, 2011 at 6:38pm You will be fun to work with GYantz! And remember, you can never go wrong with a Wung. Two Wungs don't make a right, but you'll have left-overs. Liberals are the easy ones to fix if your on the go. Their thin skin'd, no backbone, brain, heart or guts, ya just bleed'em, heat'em and eat'em. And yes, they taste like chicken. I'll be honest, it's hard to imagine eating human flesh. But it's the only opion before i eat Fluffy or Boots the family pet. Evan i have morals! So i guess you could say "i did it for the childern."
Permalink Reply by N.C.R.T. CO on May 19, 2011 at 6:45am Prior to the Y2K scare, I prepared for the possibility of civil unrest. I stockpiled food and water, batteries, Short wave radio, ammo, etc... When nothing happened, I took a lot of ribbing from family, friends, and neighbors. Fast forward to September of 2003, the Power Grid went down, and I was prepared. I was the only one with water, plenty of food, and I also had what was sought most, INFORMATION ! Funny how I was suddenly the smartest guy on the block, passing out water and information to my Family, friends and neighbors. My point is YOU NEVER KNOW WHAT MAY HAPPEN, being prepared is always your best option. Also be prepared for those who have raised their eyebrows at you in the past to show up at your home looking for help. I was able to help others, but had the situation continued much longer I would have had no choice but to cut off some of the help I was providing. I live in the country now where most of my neighbors are much more self reliant. When people question my preparedness now, I simply smile and leave them with this warning :" Piss poor planning on your part does not constitute an emergency on mine ! "

What I have found in even trying to explain to the "UNBELIEVERS", is that I am able to use my stockpile as my own little grocery store. That I buy when things are on sale, in quantity, and that I'll never come up short, even if I'm not able to get to the grocery for a week or two. Therefore my stockpiling makes a little sense, even to the senseless. I try to tell them that they would be able to save money that way, also. Buy in Bulk, Divide and Store. "It costs more to be poor". Think about the last time you were out of something at 11:24P on a Sunday. Nothing open, if at all, but the 7-11, or tiny corner store, even if you were near one at all. They might have had what you needed, but probably 5 times the price you would have paid ordinarily, and probably outdated, too. Then think of the people who buy that way all the time. Small quantities, limited choices, and only when they absolutely have to have it. No thought for the future...
