There are all sorts of posion plants and even things like blisters and rash. Do you know what to do for them?
Now, will always be the best time to learn as long as now is not after you get into a batch of posion plants, while sitting or crawling on hands and knees.

Permalink Reply by Chancy Yardbird on June 14, 2012 at 6:03pm The poison from ivy, oak, and sumac is an oil that can bind to the skin and be difficult to get rid of. But like most oils can be cut with dish soap or mineral oil you might have in the garage. Wash the oils away thoroughly and the itch and blistering will be much easier to treat with calamine and or other skin comfort creams. Livestock, pets, kids, and cloths can carry the poison oil for long periods of time making it possible to be striken long after and far from where you would expect it. No one is ever completely immune. But living, eating, drinking and just being among indigenous plants and micro organisms in an area can help you build some immunity to the local varieties while still being completly vulnerable in other areas. It's sort of where the native "being one with nature" stuff comes from.

Permalink Reply by Nam Vet on June 15, 2012 at 7:07am That brings up a great reason to have a bit of Dawn in our packs. It won't take much. Load up a pill bottle with it.
Thanks Chancy.

I am not picking, just bringing up a secondary problem. And keep in mind that dogs will lick everyone pretty much, should we not be alone. Maybe spreading the rash.
Permalink Reply by Chancy Yardbird on June 18, 2012 at 1:36pm I asked our vet. They said to mix one cup of oatmeal with one cup of baking soda and 1/4 cup of shelled nuts (any kind). This is to be ground or pulverized as finely as possible then mixed with one cup of water and a drop or two of dish soap for lathering only. This should result in a human and dog shampoo that can help treat the after effects of rash/blisters after the oils are cleared away. after bathing, leaving alone to dry, leave the dry powder on the skin and dust away from the fur/hair surface.
Permalink Reply by Nam Vet on June 19, 2012 at 9:12am THat is a lot of work. Worth it, I am sure. However I want to get to reconize all posionous plants that grows in the USA. Then stay out of them when ever possible.
Permalink Reply by Doug Sowle on June 15, 2012 at 2:45am One thing that is used for jellyfish stings when diving works for other stinging things as well. A mixture of urine and sand will neutralize poison from stinging insects. Urine (uric acid) and sand mixed to a paste can work wonders.
Permalink Reply by Nam Vet on June 15, 2012 at 6:18am Thank you Doug. We all have to go every so often no matter where we happen to be. That is as long as we have water to drink. All we will need on hand will be sand or some other thickening agent..
I understand that Vinegar also does the trick as well.
Ah! But who has Vinegar with them on the battlefield?
Permalink Reply by Phillip P. Foreman on June 18, 2012 at 1:47pm Guess! {8<{) I mean how you going to fix a good salad with no vinegar? All good tips here. You can find dish soap and small shampoos in the travel size junk of your grocery and drug store. Sometimes you can get them in envelopes. PS if you plan to venture near Oak Hill, Ohio bear in mind it should have been named "Poison Oak Hill!"
Permalink Reply by Phillip P. Foreman on June 19, 2012 at 10:18am Couple of other situations I'm sure some of you folk who visited SE Asia learned as well. "YEAST INFECTIONS" They get you in the crotch, cause Monkey Butt, between the toes and in fatter folk in the folds and under the boobies. Clean and dry man keep 'em clean and dry. Head to the "ladies department" and get the yeast cream Miconozole. It has the same active ingredient as the scrip stuff and works well. Here is a tip for "We" diabetics: Got a rash, sore or boo boo that refuses to heal? Put a tad of this on to alter the Ph, kill the yeast and on top of that a bit of triple antibiotic ointment. Chiggers, mites, and ticks paint them with nail polish. They can't breathe and they leave or die.
