I mistakenly sent all the weapons and ammo group this, so Iam going to try this again. I do not know much about tactical weapons. I can only afford one rifle right now. I would like to have a gun that I can go to training events with and also hunt big game with. The 308 would fit that catagory although the 270 would also. The 223 would most likely be the best rifle to go to training with because of the lesser cost of ammo, but I would not be able to hunt with it.  I wanted to ask every body thier opinions on what they think from their experience, if you could only buy one gun for both purposes what make and caliber would you purchase and why? I know that there are a lot of makes out there, and many of them are good, but which one would you choose?

want 1000 meter distance for cheap a 7mag is a good buy 165 nozzlers and think a medium to fast burn powder loaded up to 3000 ft per second.I bought a 7 mag Remington ADL with a 4x12 scope for 350 dollars the other day. the 30-06 still has lots of reload brass out there. My model 72 Winchester packs a recomended 172 grain( it was designed for the Army Olympics in !972 when the US Army took on the Ruskies in a world shoot.
the 375 is a good rifle also. for 300 meters the 44 mag with tungsten insert penetrates 1/4 inch of steel. i ve spent 3 years trying to get a chey-tac .409 man! are they hard to get.my .50 Barret is a real winner though its in AZ ready for use by my family.

you can find .50 bullets for the 50 in Lake havasue AZ on the Colorado river as they used that whole area for 50 cal testing during the war. theres a Gravel Co. there i used to buy my bullets then reloaded them into brass.

Buy a used whatever. More cost, less ammo storage. Not a good trade off.

If I was limited to one single weapon, I would choose the Springfield Arsenal M1A. The 308 Winchester, or 7.62x51 MM NATO round is sufficient to hunt anything short of large dangerous game. The rifle itself is inherently accurate at any feasible range within the limitation of the catridge. The cartridge lends itself well to handloading, and has too many projectile choices to even begin to list here in this forum. The weapon is highly versatile. You have many option for accessorizing if that was your forte'. I personally use an AR-10 manufactured by Rock River Arms. Model LAR-8. Excellent, accurate weapon. Easy to maintain as opposed to the M1A. So, either one works well. Each has it's drawbacks. But these are easily off-set when you consider the functional capacity that they can be deployed in. Defense or hunting, you could do alot worse than either platform.

At a gun show one of the dealers was making speeches about caliber choices. He points out the 308 NATO round is the most available. It also is largely because it has fairly good range. He said the winchester mag and the 338 Lapua have a little longer range but the cost and availability of rounds is a disadvantage if thinking for militia defense. My 308 is the Remington sniper rifle version. I also have the AK47 for the same reasons. But when the dealers are warning of the issues of supply and cost this should have weight. The 50Cal semi auto is on my wish list for stopping trucks. The Navy Seal hero with 150 terrorist kills used the winchester 338 Mag and the 338 Lapua. Chris Kyle in his book "American Sniper" points out the 338 Lapuo will stop a truck just as well as the 50cal. He says the best way to stop a truck is to kill the driver. But of course in a civil war situation, one needs to use reserve in case the truck is a friendly. Kill the truck. I picked up a 200 round pouch of 308 surplus from the German Army. That seller said it is great quality. Because of extremely high demand all sorts of ammo are hard to get. Buy what you can and keep buying.

On a facebook survival page the person "Libertas Semper" reports on is 5.56 ""The Ar in the middle with the sand colored bottom is mine too and it actually matches a different upper but that upper that is on it for the picture is my sniper platform for 5.56 and it can hit golf balls at 565 yards"" So with its sniper setup it works. Also just hit someone anywhere with it and they are out off immediate combat.

For short range patrol, camp defense, and in home security I have matched a 9mm S/W parabellum with a Marlin 9mm camp rifle. Needless to say they both have many mags. For tactical recon and LRPs I prefer the SKS. Cheap to shoot, takes a beating and keeps on ticking, mega capacity mags are plentiful and cost effective. Accuracy is iffy but if you can get it sighted in once smacking the barrel up side a tree won't shake it. It is a real good weapon to start with because it is cheap and readily available. A bazillion yellow, brown, and blacked skinned warriors can't be wrong. {8<{)

maybe someone should start a defensive perimeter thread. I see very little info here and its truly important. 3 years ago i had the info given to me about drones.( we discussed using models for area defense. now those models are even more finally tuned and advanced.
My suggestion is to look into our vietmnam era traps and perimeter defense mechanisms along with the new computer age and the ability to extend the perimeters out to over a mile in size.

I would be happy to pursue that on my web site if there isn't a spot here but my number one "goto" guy is on his 7th tour in the sand box, number 2 guy is a guest of the state of Tennessee at present! I think it is a great idea to focus a discussion on basic home/base defense.

Good info. {8<{)

AR-15 VS. SU-16 9 Replies

My home group and I have decided to standardize our ammunition and have chosen the 5.56 NATO round as our standard so that when the time comes, we can exchange ammo and mags in the heat of battle if need be. None of us want to be caught running out…Continue
