A great idea yet the local does have it fall backs due to the time of the year and popular usage. I am not familiar with other locations, haven't been here long enough.

Title 36: Parks, Forests, and Public Property

CHAPTER II: FOREST SERVICE, DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE

PART 261: PROHIBITIONS

Subpart A: General Prohibitions

261.10 - Occupancy and use.

The following are prohibited:

(d) Discharging a firearm or any other implement capable of taking human life, causing injury, or damaging property as follows:

(1) In or within 150 yards of a residence, building, campsite, developed recreation site or occupied area, or

(2) Across or on a National Forest System road or a body of water adjacent thereto, or in any manner or place whereby any person or property is exposed to injury or damage as a result in such discharge.

(3) Into or within any cave.

I spoke with our local Ranger he gave me a pamphlet which states these exact regs, also his only suggestion was to be courteous to officer when you are in 'open carry mode'.

I have a call into the Mountainair office to verify the above. One thing I do have at this time is that there is NO potable water @ the campground so this will be a concern for all of us.

At this time I think this could very well be handled in one day, perhaps two should we decide that would be better.

Yes, I agree with you on the firearms, take em but secure em in the vehicle rather than OC. I have 6 5 gallon water cooler jugs available, and planned on taking at least 3, just need to find a way to cap and tap. Anyone in a pickup or car could bring ice, if we do haul food in for a pot luck or meal of some sort there should be some available.
<~~~~gun totting red neck... but ill leave them at home for the  sake of good PR... funny i was reading over the NM gun laws... it appears that anyone can carry conceled as long as the weapon is unloaded... and use the same rules as open carry... IE you cant take it into a place that is for selling booze... as far as the weapon being unloaded... with enugh practice anyone can learn to load a pistol in less than 1.5 sec...

Don't bow and muzzle-loader seasons should start somewhere in that time???

Might be competition for campsites.

Unit 14

14 Sandia Ranger District is open to bow only Oct. 22-26

This is the GMU for that area, as you can see should not be a conflict

NMDGF Map

I have a phone con scheduled with Mountainair Ranger District I will verify this.

Thanks are you on line? If so Private chat please

As per telecon today with the Mountainair Ranger office:

  1. There is no problem with weapons, just abide by the regulations for National forests.
  2. No open season on 10/1, Muzzleloader closes on 9/30.
  3. No potable water available, so we need to carry our own.
  4. Balloon fiesta runs from 10/1-10/9, apparently the busiest season for the campground due to that and the Fall leaf color change, so that may present a problem.

She suggested perhaps moving to the Red Canyon campground, this is the same caliber of CG as Fourth of July.

Any suggestions from the group as to what you would prefer to do?

Ok, at this point it appears that only Pancho, and I will be in attendance. We have discussed this and feel it would do us no good for just us two to be there, so what I guess needs to happen is a postponment until more can attend. I am asking everyone to look at your calendar find a date that you could attend and please post it so we can plan this thing again, say in about two weeks, or so before the weather turns bad on us. The meeting site may also need to change as we progress, so if that is an issue for you, then please let us know that also. If you are not interested in a meet at this time then please post that, so we can try to get a headcount. I urge all of us to try to get together so we can get this ball rolling and headed in some direction.
If we meet on Sat. Oct. 22, that will give me plenty of time to get back to NM. I will also travel to wherever the meeting is to be held.
