I want some outside opinions on a subject I have been debating. I am not the best shot in the world and in close quarters shooting with a pistol may not be the best thing for me. However I have been debating should I drop the pistol in favor of a pump shotgun so that my weapon loadout is something like this:
knife/machete/sword
pump shotgun (probably a mossberg)
rifle (AK-47 or 10/22)

But it's good that you have noticed how effective a good short sword would be. Like firearms, good ones aint cheap...cheap ones aint good. I like the tactical (two-hand) wakizashi, 20.5" of hi-carbon, plasma coated sting...which are very easy on the ears. And it never needs re-loading, won't jam and only needs cleaning!
Permalink Reply by Orion Darkwood on January 25, 2012 at 1:34pm Agreed I am actually better with a sword and crossbow than a gun. Not to mention I have noticed most people don't react to a gun but you pull out a sword people notice. I guess its the whole I can probably survive and walk away from a gunshot wound but a good sharp sword will put a hurting on you.
Permalink Reply by Orion Darkwood on January 25, 2012 at 1:39pm I agree, I don't want to be close enough where I need a pistol or shotgun. But I am looking from it with two points
1. With a shotgun I can be off target and still hit/I can take out a couple of targets close together with one shot.
2. Just something about a shotgun seems to command respect.
My SHTF plan does involve me being mobile for 3-7 days (the amount of time it takes to reach one of my BOL's). So weight is a issue. Thanks for the advice.
Permalink Reply by Greg Russell on January 25, 2012 at 4:50pm You say, close quarters shooting, and I suppose this means primarily in the home. It`s a well accepted thought that a shotgun is indeed the best defensive weapon for the home. Handguns are fine, but any experienced operator will tell you, a sidearm is only fit to use if it`s required to get you to a longarm. Especially, if you`re not the best pistol shot, a shotgun for home defense is practical, and efficient. Just, please, don`t make the novice mistake, of believing that by simply racking your shotgun, you`re going to run an intruder off. Deadly force is not a game. If you believe deadly force is required, you have your shotgun locked and loaded with a round in the chamber, you squeeze off the safety, and you end the threat, period.

I understand its not a game, I am just saying that if faced with a shotgun or a pistol I would be more concerned with the person with a shotgun since getting hit with a shotgun is going to be messy and painful even if they don't hit me square on. Also I know and respect guns and if I am chambering a round in response to a human threat then I have all intentions on using that round and how many rounds it takes to remove that threat. In short if I aim a weapon at someone I am going to pull the trigger unless I have a extremely good reason not to.
And yes I am looking for home defense as well as SHTF weapon.

for home defense i have my Mossberg 12 gauge slide action right at the head of my bed and loaded with 5 rounds of 00 buck.
it has the 18 1/2 Barrel it's NOT for hunting for that i can change out the barrel, but i have other shotguns for that.
i also have my Ruger stainless Security six 357 on my night table by the bed.
in a home defense situation the shotgun in my opinion is the best choice.

I could see using slugs in a SHTF but I am also using this for home defense where buckshot would be better. I live in town and rather not kill/injure anyone passing by which happens alot and all hours of the night.
Thanks for the advice.
Permalink Reply by Mark Gardner on January 25, 2012 at 5:31pm A pistol is something movie heroes use to assault a fortress. Normally a pistol is a last ditch effort to save yourself when you least expect trouble and are not carrying a rile or shotgun. If trouble is coming your way always pick up the long gun.
Permalink Reply by Mark Gardner on January 25, 2012 at 6:43pm Your battlerifle goes everywhere with you when there is trouble. In training you'll be blessed with a "Dummy Cord" if you let it get out of arms reach, in battle if you didn't learn you were dead. My 1911 is right here right now. Very peaceful times so far. It will change.
Permalink Reply by Mark Gardner on January 25, 2012 at 8:08pm It's going to the Western States Singlestack Championships (combat shooting) in a few days. I guess I'm still not too old to know how to use it, but it has nowhere near the potential of a good long gun.

I know that lesson very well, I never been in the military but I know and understand the Rifleman's Creed (for those not in the know look below)
This is my rifle. There are many like it, but this one is mine.
My rifle is my best friend. It is my life. I must master it as I must master my life.
My rifle, without me, is useless. Without my rifle, I am useless. I must fire my rifle true. I must shoot straighter than my enemy who is trying to kill me. I must shoot him before he shoots me. I will...
My rifle and myself know that what counts in this war is not the rounds we fire, the noise of our burst, or the smoke we make. We know that it is the hits that count. We will hit...
My rifle is human, even as I, because it is my life. Thus, I will learn it as a brother. I will learn its weaknesses, its strength, its parts, its accessories, its sights and its barrel. I will keep my rifle clean and ready, even as I am clean and ready. We will become part of each other. We will...
Before God, I swear this creed. My rifle and myself are the defenders of my country. We are the masters of our enemy. We are the saviors of my life.
So be it, until victory is America's and there is no enemy, but peace!
Permalink Reply by james r shelton on February 5, 2012 at 5:09am You could use a 357 with 38 snake shot for the first two rounds then frangible to fill out. Then you'd also have a decent weapon to use if you must leave home and for some reason can't get to or use your shoulder weapon.
