I want some outside opinions on a subject I have been debating. I am not the best shot in the world and in close quarters shooting with a pistol may not be the best thing for me. However I have been debating should I drop the pistol in favor of a pump shotgun so that my weapon loadout is something like this:
knife/machete/sword
pump shotgun (probably a mossberg)
rifle (AK-47 or 10/22)

The reality of an edge has psychological effects on the user and usee. There is a hesitation most folks have to hacking another human being to death. Try killing animals with your blades first. If you can do that without puking, I don't know how you graduate to human beings without real-life experience. It's all fine and good to talk Hypotheses, but ....
Guns are a different matter. What works for you in cqc is what works for you. get some training and find what functions.

It really doesn't matter so much your caliber, your choice of round, your sidearm vs. your longarm, your gadgets, nothin matters more than SHOT PLACEMENT. And this doesn't mean hitting your target somewhere. It means LETHALITY. A .357 in an extremity vs. .22 to the face? or birdshot or .223 to the abdomen? Longarms and machetes are real hard to wield, for different reasons, in a furnished home, w the lights out. Knife is a nice threat but you know what they say about bringing a knife to a gun fight, and thats assuming you dont get it turned on you. I've YET to see hand to hand NOT result in SOMEONE losing a weapon. I'd strongly suggest becoming pro w the versatile handgun, not the weapon of choice for other types of combat, but in home defense, VERY NICE 'go to'.
And be very concerned about where bullets land if you MISS your intended target.
And concerned about where rifle rounds go after they LEAVE your intended target.
After some proficiency, consider the reality of shooting injured or weak-handed. You may be surprised. Has anyone helped you identify which is your dominant eye? I'm left eye dominant, right handed shooter, was very happily surprised when I was caused to shoot lefty. Was my best of the day. I shoot lefty w/ a bench gun, else I look like i'm climbing on it to get my eye right.
Its YOUR house, home team advantage, theres a many of ways to get the initiative on invaders, pro or not so pro. Be prepared to shoot THRU walls on instinct, YOU know where every creak and tweak is in that house. Just don't shoot the wife.
Do get a dog, a natural guard.
Sorry I got focused on home defense.
Close quarters is another animal, is the stage you're envisioning, you against the world (undefined enemy) or your unit against hostiles?
Operating w/ a small unit in combat requires split second thinking, superior aggressiveness, and coordination BIGTIME.
Alone against an unknown force, you have to fully explore withdrawal and evasion. The most important underlying factor in defense or escape is KNOWING your options and KEEPING them open. Be prepared to abandon everything to stay alive. You willNOT successfully dig in somewhere and defend a piece of property. You can PACK your bags from here to doomsday and if you dont have multiple escape scenarios, think of ways to look good dying.
So pistol vs. shotgun, for reasons of imprecision....in close quarters (scenario removed from the consequences that got you there OR, out of CQC to the next stage of combat), SHOTGUN hands down. But still improficiency thing still sticks in my craw. Don't choose shotgun in the belief it equivocates for bad aim! If you just want to impress your enemy w noise, throw firecrackers at him.
Not only is the shotgun superior in CQC but the pistol IS inferior, given the TWO choices. There is some spectacular shotgun choices, enhancements and ammunition options out there. CQC necessarily involves other combat scenarios that are distinct, CQC can take you into building interiors as well as evolve into jungle warfare.
My instincts say get proficient w/ the pistol as a means to GET to your shotgun, and out of the house, and then focus on escape and evasion tactics.
And PRAY for PEACE.

My home group and I have decided to standardize our ammunition and have chosen the 5.56 NATO round as our standard so that when the time comes, we can exchange ammo and mags in the heat of battle if need be. None of us want to be caught running out…Continue
