Young Mr. Watkins, you appear to be wise far beyond your years, sir.

One thing I will add is make sure you have a field parts kit for you main battle rifle or carbine

I would say unless you have a donkey folling you, several rifles wont work. I say have one good rifle w/plenty of mags and ammo.

It all depends on how much money you have. My suggestion is that if you have the money buy several. I have a SKS, 30-06, 12 Ga.Shootgun, 22 rifle, and two handguns. I will be buying several more guns and lots of ammo, shortly. Here in, Arizona is much easier to buy guns than in most other states. Private purchases are just that private,no dealer needed.

223,9mm.308.22, 12 ga. all you need ,shtf be lot out there to pick up lol

not how many you have it how good your with it' rember one thing how many in your famly 1 for each the best 22 for the kids wife 12 or 20ga or a 223 when shtf and can up date them as you pick them up

I have not been able to pick one or 2 so I ended up with several and alot of ammo for each. I figure If I stay where I'm at I may have to arm others that aren't prepared or have a firearm in different locations. several bullpup rifles If I have to bug out, several long guns for long distance (three barretts and several 308's), shotguns for short distance and several sig and HK handguns. I have a 5 drawer filing cabinet full of ammo for everything.

are we considering only manual action and semi-auto?? thats a big problem cause the whole advantage of an assal. rifle is its full auto option, thats the reason these wheapons were orginally developed (sturmgewer1944 aka stg44) to have rapid fire equivalent to a machine pistol aka submachine gun (I don't like that name)but with rifle cal's to extend range (keeping in mind that subs were the size of AR15 - for example thompson)

Taking range and ammo into consideration- you don't want to start sprayn rounds that can travel thru houses, maybe an option would be a submachine gun in 9mm (propably most common round) with all the goodies (light, holographic sight etc) and a long range rifle in 308 for example? could be AR15 semi auto with floating barrel but could be a bolt action as you wont have to worry about braking it.
