When it comes to builds in the AR platform, IMHO buying a good used AR platform is cheaper than a custom build. The key word is complete upper and complete lower. These need nothing additional accept the other half, also a standard AR15 in 5.56 lower will only allow for certain upper configs. The standard AR10 is designed for larger caliber in 308 and so on. It all comes back to the mag well and what it will accomodate. AR15 will easily accomodate 5.45,5.56 and even 22LR and 300 Blackout. If I'm not mistaken you could also put a 7.62X39 upper on a 5.56 lower and that would fit the mag well but it would take an AR10 to fit Nato 308/7.62X51 or some other high power 30 caliber round.

9mm Makarov is one I load, and yes, it is bigger than 9x19, and yes, it is about the same length as the 380, and it is 9x18..just for info...
